Samson Young will lead an orchestra of iPhones, one of the first musical performances on the West Kowloon Cultural site. If you own an iPhone and battery powered computer speakers, you can take part! Musical experience is encouraged but definitely not essential.

Unlike traditional instruments, iPhones do not have to be physically modified to make sound. The in-built microphone can be transformed into a non-speech sensor, enabling participants to blow into it in order to mimic a wind instrument. Likewise, iPhones can be used to mimic percussion, stringed and many other instruments. You will be given tools to make your own instrument and write music for it!

Schedule

-On registration, follow the instructions given in the special PDF pack and download the necessary iPhone audio software

-Prepare your part in the orchestra!

-Arrive at the West Kowloon site 30 minute before rehearsal starts, to meet other orchestra members and prepare for the rehearsal

About Samson Young

Composer Samson Young’s creative output spans the widest possible range: from music for symphony orchestra and Nintendo Gameboy, to amusement ride turned sound installation, to videos featuring himself dressed as a Teletubby. Described by contemporary music portal Sequenza 21 as “epic, dark, and fun”, Young juxtaposes the element of play with intense sonic gestures to create a music of rich darkness and perverted poetry. With formal training in classical music and a keen eye for video and installation art, Young combines his diverse interests to create unique multi-sensory concert experiences.
