West Kowloon Palimpsest: A Soundwalk with Samson Young
Samson Young will lead participants through a two sonic excursions of the West Kowloon Cultural Site at sunrise. A small group of walkers (maximum 20) will be guided through an intimate tour to discover little-known spots in West Kowloon, while listening to modified environment sounds / electronic compositions streaming from portable listening devices. West Kowloon Palimpsest is a meditative inquiry into the connection between urban spaces and our collective sonic imagination, an exercise in distrusting the ears, and a momentary disruption of sonic judgement.
The sound-walk will last for 45 minutes.
Date: 3 January 2010, 7am (meet 15 minutes before at the Main Pavilion, West Kowloon Promenade)
Cost: FREE
Registration & Enquiry: Sam Yu (852) 6200 2501 or sam.yu@hkszbiennale.org
About Samson Young
“Epic, dark, and fun” Sequenza 21 on Samson Young
Composer Samson Young’s creative output spans the widest possible range: from music for symphony orchestra and Nintendo Gameboy, to amusement ride turned sound installation, to videos featuring himself dressed as a Teletubby. Described by contemporary music portal Sequenza 21 as “epic, dark, and fun”, Young juxtaposes the element of play with intense sonic gestures to create a music of rich darkness and perverted poetry. With formal training in classical music and a keen eye for video and installation art, Young combines his diverse interests to create unique multi-sensory concert experiences.
This event is organized by William Lane/Hong Kong New Music Ensemble and Giorgio Biancorosso, in partnership with the 2009 Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism \ Architecture.
